China is one of the world's largest producer of cars and trucks. Some of its brands include Geely Automobile, Chery Automobile, Brilliance China Auto, Chang'an Motors, Changhe, BYD Auto, Great Wall Motors, Changfeng Automobile, and Hafei Motor.
Additionally, there are many foreign brands with production facilities in China. 13 of these are the final manufacturers (like VW and Chevrolet) and many others are automobile parts suppliers.
In 2006, China surpassed Japan to become the second largest auto market in the world, after the US.
In 2009, it was widely reported in the news that more new vehicles were sold in China than in the US.
On January 14 2010, John Mendel, vice president of sales at American Honda Motor warned of China's impending dominance of the global car industry, "They are a very credible threat and we discount anyone at our peril."
The Chinese automobile market is notoriously known for copying designs and technology of other brands.
