There are many things car owners to do enhance the look or performance of their cars. Some of these modifications are cosmetic and some are strictly for improved handling, acceleration, or top speed. Most cars are designed to fit precise marketing segments which require certain options and enhancements - such as 16" wheels for example, instead of the base model's 15" rims, but putting 17 or 18" wheels on the car would price it out of the manufacturer's segment. Oftentimes, buyers purchase a new car with the intentions of changing many parts. They may want to add stiffer suspension in the form of coilovers or a new damper/spring combination, they may want stickier or lower-profile tires, or even forced induction (turbo or supercharging) additions to their engines.Whatever the modification, the owner must consider a number of issues:

  • Are these modifications legal, or if not, are they "mildly illegal" and passable under an inspection or traffic stop?
  • How much will they cost?
  • Are the mods going to affect my maintenance? Will they require a lot of attention or money to maintain?
  • How will they affect the car's handling? Some cosmetic modifications can adversely affect handling (such as improperly lowering a car).
  • Is the shop or mechanic that is installing the modifications reliable? Does it have a successful track record doing so?
  • Most importantly, will they be safe?
